Page analysis explained


Our most recent release of DocBuster introduced a new feature to perform page analysis over image and pdf files.

We have received a number of calls from our clients both asking how to utilise this feature within DocBuster as well as some positive feedback about the feature itself.  With that in mind this short article will attempt to give you a quick overview on how to fire up the feature in the event you haven’t yet discovered it.

First, a brief recap on what page analysis actually is.  Put simply, in DocBuster terms it is the reporting on the page size of a page as well as whether a page contains colour.  This can be a handy feature to have when costing a print to paper job out.

Page Analysis can be enabled for either Reports or Print to Paper output types. However, it more logically sits together with the Reports output as this used to provide the cost estimate of a job.

As mentioned, this feature works over Images and PDF files and interrogates the pages within.  During processing DocBuster will examine each page and retrieve the applicable page information.

The feature can be found within the Applications Option Tab in DocBuster on the General tab.

Simply, check the PDF or Image analysis options as appropriate and DocBuster will analyse the respective pages for you.  After processing the results can be seen within the Pages report in the Summary file.

The Cost Estimate report will also reflect this analysis, see snippet below.

And that is it.  It may not be a feature for everyone but it is one of those feature requests which has cropped up time and again over the years.

Are there any downsides to using this option?  For PDF files there can be a trade off in speed of processing as the work to analyse these files can sometimes lead to an increase in processing time.  However, this depends on (a) the contents of the pdf and (b) the power of the PC DocBuster is running.

Also, since release we have also been asked once if it is possible to extend this to other file types, such as Word, Excel.  As we always attempt to accommodate our client requests where possible please let the team know if this is something that you have a requirement for now and if it would provide a real benefit to you.
